How long does a Total Knee Replacement last?

Modern knee replacement implants are designed for long-term use, and many can function successfully for 20 years or more. However, implant longevity varies between individuals and can be influenced by factors such as age, body weight, activity level, implant characteristics, bone quality and overall health. In some cases, an implant may eventually require revision because of wear, loosening, infection or other problems.

What can I expect after Total Knee Replacement?

You can expect some pain, swelling and stiffness during the early recovery period. These usually improve progressively as the knee heals and rehabilitation continues. Physiotherapy helps restore movement and strength and supports a gradual return to everyday activities. The goal is to achieve a more comfortable and functional knee, although the movement and sensation of an artificial knee may not be exactly the same as a natural knee.

How long does it take to recover from Total Knee Replacement?

Recovery happens gradually. Walking and basic rehabilitation usually begin soon after surgery when medically appropriate. During the following weeks, patients progressively work on knee movement, muscle strength and walking ability. Many patients make significant functional progress during the first 6 to 12 weeks, while improvements can continue for several months. Your recovery timeline depends on your health, mobility before surgery and rehabilitation progress.

What happens during Total Knee Replacement surgery?

During Total Knee Replacement, the damaged surfaces of the knee joint are carefully removed and replaced with artificial components. The replacement typically includes components for the thighbone and shinbone, with a medical-grade plastic spacer between them. The underside of the kneecap may also be resurfaced when appropriate. The aim is to create a stable and functional joint that allows more comfortable movement.

Am I a suitable candidate for Total Knee Replacement?

Total Knee Replacement may be considered when severe knee damage causes persistent pain, stiffness and difficulty with everyday activities, particularly when non-surgical treatments are no longer providing sufficient relief. Suitability depends on your symptoms, examination, imaging, overall health and the condition of your knee. A clinical assessment is needed before deciding whether surgery is appropriate.
